beginner Triplet Common

Yakuhai: Chun

役牌 中 | yakuhai chun

Complete a triplet (or quad) of red dragon tiles to score this dependable 1-han yaku.

Han Value
1 han (closed) / 1 han (open)

Example Hand

7z 7z 7z 3m 4m 5m 1p 2p 3p 5s 6s 7s 8p 8p

Conditions

  • Your hand must contain a triplet or quad (three or four copies) of chun (red dragon, 7z)
  • The triplet can be open or closed — you can call pon on a discarded red dragon
  • The rest of your hand must form a valid winning hand (three more melds and a pair)

Strategy Tips

  • Red dragon is arguably the most recognizable tile in mahjong. Experienced players watch chun discards very carefully. If you’re collecting them, expect opponents to be cautious about discarding the third one.
  • Holding all three dragon types (haku, hatsu, chun) opens the door to shousangen (little three dragons, 2 han) or even daisangen (big three dragons, yakuman). If you start with pairs in two dragon types and a triplet in the third, consider pursuing the bigger hand.
  • If your starting hand has a single red dragon with no clear path to a pair, discard it early. Holding a lone dragon tile wastes space in your hand and risks dealing it into someone else’s pon later when it’s more dangerous.
